Advocate Rapolu Bhaskar has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the proper implementation of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, with a specific focus on the establishment of government-funded old age homes in Telangana. His petition highlights the urgent need for comprehensive support systems to address the challenges faced by senior citizens, many of whom are abandoned or neglected due to the decline of traditional family structures and increasing urbanization.

The PIL raises concerns about the state’s failure to fulfill its obligations under the Act, which mandates the establishment of fully functional old age homes in every district to provide food, accommodation, and medical care to elderly individuals in need. Advocate Bhaskar pointed out that most districts either lack these facilities or have poorly maintained ones, leaving vulnerable senior citizens without shelter or proper care. This failure exacerbates the hardships of elderly individuals who often face financial insecurity, health problems, and social isolation.

In his petition, Advocate Bhaskar recommended several measures to improve the welfare of senior citizens. These include the construction of well-equipped old age homes in every district, the provision of regular healthcare and mental health counseling, and the establishment of a 24/7 helpline to assist senior citizens in distress. He also emphasized the importance of creating public awareness campaigns to educate families about their responsibilities toward elderly members and the need for monitoring committees to ensure that old age homes operate effectively and adhere to required standards.

Recognizing the gravity of the issue, the High Court has admitted the PIL and directed the state government to submit a detailed report on the status of old age homes and senior citizen welfare programs. This intervention is expected to prompt the government to take immediate steps toward addressing the gaps in care and ensuring that senior citizens are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Advocate Rapolu Bhaskar’s PIL is a significant step toward building a society that values and protects its elderly population. By advocating for their rights, he aims to create a framework where senior citizens can live their later years in comfort, safety, and dignity. His initiative highlights the collective responsibility of society and the state to care for those who have contributed so much to their families and communities.
